A violet laser we're building for a friend.
The main component is the laser diode from a "Blu-ray" DVD player. The color is actually violet (around 410 nm) and both the camera and the human eye has a little trouble resolving the beam due to it's short wavelength that puts it at the extreme of visual acuity.
At full power, we're driving the diode at 130 milliamps from a 9 volt battery, using an adjustable current regulator based on the LM 317. Output is somewhere around 150-180 milliwatts at full power (we're guessing- it melts through black tape almost immediately).
